Logan Training Great Success

Training held in Logan Friday December 9th was a great success. 22 attorneys and 22 support staff attended two sessions at Stevens-Henager College. Trainers Ruth Kawashima and Krysta Arner led classes also attended by Judge Nuffer.
Training Statistics
The court has trained 638 persons, including 314 attorneys and 224 staff persons. In addition, 81 trainers have been trained, working at 46 firms. Overall, 68 training classes have been held for persons other than court staff.
Criminal Case E-Filings At High Percentage
During the month of November 2005, 753 documents in criminal cases were e-filed by attorneys, while 3,302 documents were filed by court users. Thus, 19% of all criminal documents filed were e-filed by counsel. In December (through the 6th), 25% of all criminal documents have been e-filed by counsel. The increased percentage indicates better compliance with the
requirement that criminal case documents be e-filed by counsel.
And the overall percentages may not get much better. Most criminal case documents simply must be filed by the court -- the indictment, warrants, returns, minute entries, detention and release orders, judgments, etc. Louise York looked at two criminal case files and found that in a simple criminal case only 2 of the 17 documents could have been e-filed by counsel, while in a more complex case only 5 of the total 45 documents could have been e-filed by counsel. So, the overall percentage of 20 - 25% may represent full compliance with the
mandatory e-filing requirement in criminal cases.
Senior Judges Request Paper Courtesy Copies
A paper courtesy copy is now required for all papers filed in a case assigned to a senior judge. The courtesy copies should be mailed directly to the Judge's chambers or may be dropped off at the Intake Counter
in an envelope addressed to the Judge. This will include any cases assigned to Judge Jenkins, Judge Winder, Judge Greene and Judge Sam.
New Utility Facilitates E-Mailing

A new utility in CM/ECF provides a ready-made list of e-mail addresses for a case. By selecting Utilities, Mailings, Mailing Info for a Case, a report is prepared with (a) a list of those receiving electronic notice, (b) a list of those receiving 'manual' notice and (c) a comma separated list of e-mail addresses for all counsel in the case who have an email address on file.
The comma separated list can be copied and pasted into an e-mail message, to send a message to all counsel in a case who have supplied their e-mail addresses to the court.

November Attorney E-Filings Top 1,200
During November 2005, attorneys (or more likely their authorized staff) e-filed 1,209 documents. This is a 22% increase over October attorney e-filings. The total of documents e-filed by attorneys exceeds 3,000.
There are now 760 registered e-filers in the District of Utah. 280 of those have been trained by court trainers, while others have registered on the basis of existing registration in other courts, or have been trained by law firm trainers. There are 79 law firm trainers in 38 law firms.
