Sprint and Cogent Make Temporary Peace
As reported last week, Sprint terminated its internet connections with Cogent due to a dispute between the two firms. Between Thursday afternoon, October 30, and Sunday afternoon, November 2, those internet peering connections were severed. This prevented any law firm or any member of the public using Cogent as an ISP from getting access to CM/ECF, PACER, or the courts' public web sites. This disruption also prevented Cogent subscribers from filing case materials, receiving notices of electronic filing (NEFs), or reviewing case records already in the system. Similarly, e-mail traffic from a court could not be received by Cogent subscribers.
These connections have been TEMPORARILY restored over the weekend by Sprint. Sprint indicates that this reconnection will last approximately two weeks while the two companies attempt to resolve their dispute.
Given the two-week reconnection period Cogent subscribers may need to find alternative means of completing their court related transactions. Immediate planning for this potential change is recommended.
Sprint and Cogent have published their respective views on the dispute.
